4 Nov 2009 - HEN Site Visit

Archived Event
The Humber Environmental Network (HEN) is delighted to have arranged a visit for members to Muntons Malt on the afternoon of November 4th.

Most recently Muntons were placed 41st by judges from the Sunday Times in the newspaper’s Best Green Companies aw

During the visit, attendees will hear how the company achieved this through employee engagement and a range of capital investments. A site visit will also include the reed beds which Muntons installed to deal with their effluent.

Muntons has been producing malt and malted ingredients for over 80 years. During this time they have grown to become a significant international player in the supply of malts, malt extracts, homebrew kits, flours and flakes to the food and drinks industry

The site in Flambrough has been built to the highest standards of hygiene and using modern microprocessor control, the 150 tonne and 200 tonne circular stainless steel vessels produce 95,000 tpa of indirectly fired kilned malt per annum.

Distilling, brewing and food malts for domestic and export markets are produced at Flamborough Maltings and much of the barley is sourced locally.

They recently invested £4million in a project which provides 24,000 tonnes of barley storage, high-tec barley cleaning equipment, highly efficient and environmentally friendly barley drying and a safety focused vehicle management system.

This unique project, which received a grant of £780,000 from Yorkshire Forward through the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE), will also mean a reduced carbon footprint for malting operations due to less haulage movements and more efficient processing.

The barley drier alone will cut CO² emissions by around 650 tonnes per year compared to farm based drying. In environmental terms this would require around 236 hectares of mature woodland to produce a similar reduction in CO²
